Issued at Misr under the Fatimid caliph al-Zahir li-I'zaz Din Allah (AH 411–427 / AD 1021–1036), this dinar belongs to one of the great gold coinages of the medieval Mediterranean. Al-Zahir came to the throne as a boy following the mysterious disappearance of his father al-Hakim, and much of his early reign was guided by his formidable aunt Sitt al-Mulk. Fatimid dinars of this era were prized across three continents for their consistently high purity and became a benchmark trade currency. The distinctive concentric design, with its Shi'a formula naming 'Ali, sets Fatimid gold apart from its Sunni contemporaries.
