Struck at the Egyptian mint of Misr, this dinar was issued under the Tulunid ruler Harun ibn Khumarawayh (AH 283–292 / AD 896–905) while naming the reigning 'Abbasid caliph al-Mu'tadid billah, as convention required. The Tulunids were the first largely independent dynasty to govern Egypt in the Islamic period, and their gold coinage reflects both this autonomy and their nominal deference to Baghdad. Harun came to power young and reigned during the twilight of Tulunid rule, before Egypt was reabsorbed into direct 'Abbasid control in 905. Purely epigraphic in the classical manner, the coin carries the Islamic profession of faith together with the mint, date and caliphal titles, its fields framed by Qur'anic marginal legends.
