This dinar of the second standard type was struck at Misr during the extraordinarily long reign of al-Mustansir billah (AH 427–487 / AD 1036–1094), at roughly fifty-eight years the longest-reigning of the Fatimid caliphs and one of the longest-reigning rulers of the medieval Islamic world. His time on the throne spanned both the zenith of Fatimid power and the beginnings of its decline, including the great famine and administrative crisis known as the Shidda. Fatimid gold nonetheless remained the most trusted coinage of the Mediterranean world throughout his rule. Somewhat clipped and with light doubling, the piece is otherwise extremely fine and displays the crisp concentric legends characteristic of the dynasty.
