The Tulunids were the first largely independent dynasty to govern Egypt in the Islamic period, and their gold coinage reflects both this autonomy and their nominal deference to Baghdad. Harun came to power young and reigned during the twilight of Tulunid rule, before Egypt was reabsorbed into direct 'Abbasid control in 905.
